What We Know About the Fatalities of the Bondi Terrorist Incident

A minimum of 16 lives were killed and over 40 were wounded when gunmen opened fire at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian police have labeled a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, authorities have confirmed the death toll remains at 16, including one of the alleged attackers. Additionally, 42 injured people were taken to the hospital.

The victims are still awaiting publicly named, but police believe their ages span from 10 and 87 years old.

Below are the individuals who have been named so far.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Described as a father of five children, he served as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She recounted the events leading up to the shooting, stating they were standing when the gunfire erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured immense hardship in their childhood. They had later moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Officially, a senior official declared that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the message continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was among those killed during the attack, according to reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospital, many remain receiving treatment, with several in serious condition. The injured comprise two officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He said he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
