One of the original creators of the well-known frozen dessert company Ben & Jerry's has claimed how parent company Unilever prevented the introduction for a new Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.

Ben Cohen, who established the company with Jerry Greenfield, revealed how he plans to personally create this new flavor within a personal series showcasing causes Ben & Jerry's has been barred from addressing publicly.

Ongoing Dispute Between Creators versus Corporate Owner

This latest development deepens the ongoing disagreement between the internationally recognized dessert company and Unilever, the UK-based consumer goods giant that has owned the ice cream brand since 2000.

Both founders maintain that the parent company along with its ice cream arm the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked their company from "maintaining its activist principles".

The Fruit Flavor becoming a Symbol of Solidarity

The entrepreneur revealed through an Instagram video how he's developing a new watermelon-based sorbet, asking for public suggestions for naming options plus potential ingredients.

“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen declared from a cooking set. “I'm creating a watermelon-flavored frozen dessert that advocates for lasting ceasefire in Palestine and calls for repairing the damage that occurred in the region.”

The watermelon has emerged as a symbol of solidarity with Palestinians due to its coloration, that closely resemble those of the Palestinian flag – red, green, black and white.

Previous Social Engagement plus Current Developments

In 2021, Ben & Jerry's refused to sell their merchandise in areas occupied by Israel, leading to the parent company transferring the Israeli operation to a local licensee, thereby permitting ongoing distribution within the occupied West Bank.

The new product line will be developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious dessert company which originally created in 2016 to support ex- political contender Senator Sanders with the flavor "Bernie's Return".

Leadership Shifts plus Upcoming Plans

Mr. Cohen revealed how he will develop other frozen dessert varieties focusing on concerns that the company was silenced from addressing publicly due to Unilever.

This development comes after co-founder Mr. Greenfield stepped down his position at Ben & Jerry's recently, after many years with the organization, citing concerns that its independence had been compromised after Unilever's decision to curb its social activism.

At that time, Mr. Cohen remarked that "Jerry has a really big heart and this conflict with Unilever was deeply distressing him."

“My conscience leads me to keep working within the organization to advocate for its independence so that it can achieve its ethical purpose, the values which it was founded on and has maintained for decades," he explained to journalists.
