Outrage Explodes as Trump's Comments on Director Rob Reiner Draws Sharp Rebuke

Figures from both sides of the partisan divide and the Hollywood industry are uniting to denounce former President Donald Trump for his comments following the shocking passing of acclaimed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.

An Inflammatory Online Post

After the couple were found dead at their Los Angeles residence, Trump posted on his platform to label the deceased director as "anguished and struggling". The post, he asserted Reiner's demise was "due to the anger he provoked others through his enormous, unyielding, and incurable condition with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".

The post quickly shifted to praising his own achievements, juxtaposing Reiner's supposed "intense obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump called the "Golden Age of America".

Police Developments and Detention

Police have since announced the arrest of the couple's 32-year-old son, Nick, on suspicion of homicide in connection with the case. Reports indicate his bail was established at a significant sum.

A Wave of Criticism from Celebrities and Politicians

The reaction to Trump's post was swift and harsh.

“What a appalling and despicable statement,” said public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a close acquaintance, similarly criticized the statements. Goldberg pointed to prior rhetoric from Trump about the killing of an activist, demanding, "Do you have no shame? Is it possible to get any lower?"

California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, simply stated, "He is a disturbed man."

Echoing this sentiment, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "What a contemptible piece of trash."

Senator Chris Murphy added, "Trump has just lost it. Now saying Rob and Michele Reiner caused their own demise because they didn’t support him. Deeply disturbing."

Rebuke from Within Political Ranks

Some GOP lawmakers also voiced disapproval.

Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the event was "a family tragedy, not about political feuds or political enemies". She also alluded to struggles with addiction and mental health within families.

Another Republican representative, Thomas Massie, called Trump's remarks "inappropriate and disgraceful" considering the circumstances. He openly dared members in his political party to justify the statements.

Reiner's History and Stance on Trump

Rob Reiner was long a vocal critic of Donald Trump. In a previous conversation, he stated Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the presidency. He had also warned about the dangers of autocracy should Trump return to power.

"We see authoritarianism making its move around the world," Reiner noted. "If we fall, there’s a risk that democracy collapse around the world."

Despite his strong criticisms, Reiner had previously expressed "absolute horror" and denounced violence for political ends without reservation after the shooting of another individual.

An Ironic Link: The Art of the Deal

Adding a layer of historical irony, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the photographer who captured the cover image for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.

Rob Reiner had previously recounted the story of the session, noting Trump's demand for "a specific hair product" while posing on a high-rise overlooking Central Park.
