No less than 64 civilians died in a law enforcement action cracking down on the organized crime group in the Brazilian city's north zone - the most extensive and fatal action in the area's history.

Four security agents were included in the fatalities during the police action in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, government representatives said. In excess of 80 suspects were taken into custody.

Intense confrontations erupted when around 2,500 police forces entered the area on the morning of the operation. The Red Command countered with gunfire, igniting obstacles and dropping bombs from drones, officials said.

The International human rights organization said it was "appalled" by the security action, demanding "prompt and effective investigations".

Operation Impact

The slum neighborhoods near the city's international airport is considered to be the central command of one of Brazil's most powerful criminal organizations.

Local authorities confirmed no less than 50 of the deceased were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".

Dozens of people were injured, including civilians caught in the crossfire.

Locals have described the mountainous region - housing around 300,000 individuals - to a "war zone" since the operation began.

Transport routes stay blocked across the area.

The Red Command group have been expanding their territory across the Rio state, growing illegal substance trade paths and dominance over the slum communities.

Local law enforcement stated more than 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were confiscated in the raid, together with numerous weapons.

The joint operation by civil and military police follows a year-long investigation.

Many of the individuals are believed to be affiliates of a group from the Brazilian state who are presently concealed in Rio de Janeiro.
