Manchester United Poised to Secure German Forward Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich

Manchester United are finalising completing the signing for prolific German striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from Bayern Munich.

A Marquee Acquisition for the WSL Side

Schüller, who has six months left on her contract, is known as a prolific goalscorer for both club and country. Having netted over 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. Her arrival is viewed as a marquee signing for the Women’s Super League side.

Departure from Munich has been anticipated since she appeared to be holding back emotions while applauding the club's fans following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

It was reported in December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its top strikers. Per multiple sources, the formalities for the move have now been completed.

Reliable Goalscoring to Strengthen the Forward Line

The 28-year-old’s arrival should represent a significant uplift to United’s attacking options. She has been remarkably consistent with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.

  • For seven consecutive seasons, including the last term, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
  • She won the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.

Building Steam at Old Trafford

The acquisition of Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when United seem to be gathering positive momentum.

Recent on-pitch successes feature qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.

Off the pitch, the winter break has seen further activity:

  1. The acquisition of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since arriving in 2023.

On the midfielder's extension, a club official commented: “Miyazawa is now a vital part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability enables her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”

Lundkvist, who has arrived from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much the club have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
